Freeport-McMoRan (Freeport) owns both the Murphy Drill Site in Jefferson Park and Inglewood Oil Field in Baldwin Hills.  Both communities are located in the section of Los Angeles known as South L.A. Inglewood Oil Field has a long history in Los Angeles, it was discovered in 1924 by Standard Oil.  Standard Oil descendants are Exxon, ConocoPhillips and Chevron.

According to the Political Economy Research Institute, Freeport-McMoRan was ranked 22nd in the 2009 report, “Justice in the Air,” among corporations emitting airborne pollutants in the US. The minority share of health risk from Freeport-McMoRan pollutants was 62.1%.

Freeport is a prolific funder of nonprofits in its original home state of Louisiana as well as its stated to be current home in Arizona.
