Hello Neighbors,

Good news!  Our City Council President Herb Wesson showed leadership in moving an important motion through key committees and full City Council where it was passed last Friday.  West Adams neighbors joined residents by the AllenCo site and throughout Los Angeles to fill City Council Chambers (see attached photos).  Now the City Attorney will draft a motion to initiate an actual moratorium on the most extreme oil drilling and production practices, including fracking, acidizing and gravel packing.

See LA Times articles on this week’s activities around a potential moratorium: http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-los-angeles-fracking-ban-20140225,0,3908061.story#axzz2uk4DJLyG ; http://www.latimes.com/local/la-me-fracking-ban-20140228,0,7982528.story#axzz2uk4DJLyG ; http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-fracking-ban-vote-20140228,0,6877842.story#axzz2uk4DJLyG .  Be on the look out for a notice from Pastor Sauls of Holman United Methodist Church on a community meeting with our City Attorney to ensure the strongest possible protections for our community.

There will be a community training tonight at LA84 Foundation, from 7-9 pm, to deepen our understanding of oil drilling and production and what is going on at the Murphy Drill Site.  The training will be led by: Tom Williams, a retired oil & gas worker and geologist.  He’s worked on an oil rig, and for the last 30 yrs or so, he advised on oil & gas for Parsons, the government of Dubai and the government of Mongolia.   He’s has also studied some of the documentation on the Murphy Drill Site.  The training will also be led by Angela-Johnson Mezaros, an attorney with Physicians for Social Responsibility, who has studied the oil industry and its activities in the local region for over a decade (see http://www.psr.org/environment-and-health/environmental-health-policy-institute/angela-johnson-meszaros.html ).  This training is in preparation for the community meeting with Freeport McMoRan Oil & Gas (date & time to be determined).

Thank you,

Joanne
