Arts Council
Brief Description of Ministry:
Major Activities l Responsibilities
The purpose and mission of the Arts Council is (1) to provide works of art that depict the beauty and presence of God; (2) to view and present art as another expression of our spirituality.
Our goals are to promote the arts through exhibits; to promote both the visual and performing arts; to increase the awareness of the positive attributes and contributions of African Americans; to discover and present African-American artists that display exceptional works of art; to enhance our self worth, affirming the richness of our culture and religious heritage through art.
The Arts Council meets the 2nd Saturday of the month from 12:30 pm to 2:00 pm in the Woodson Parlor.
The general focus of our activities/responsibilities are: to collect and display works of art that depict a spiritual focus; to visit and tour museums; to sponsor / facilitate cultural tours; to present events/programs that highlight the contribution of the arts to our daily living; to make the community aware of the arts programs through brochures, public service announcements, school involvement, workshops, drama, etc.
2012 Accomplishments / Activities:
Holman Arts Council Links You to the Arts. We continue to provide information in the monthly Holman Bellringer on cultural activities (i.e. plays, concerts, museum exhibits) available in the city, especially regarding African-American venues.
Quilt Exhibit on February 19, 2012. This bi-annual was a wonderful success as always. Members and friends really enjoyed the display of these beautiful creations that truly are works of art. This year we featured quilts ALLIE CRUMBLE of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Her award winning Necktie Quilt, created in 1982, hangs in the Wisconsin Historical Society Museum located in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. We also featured works by LUCINDA GAINES and JIMME LEE GAINES ROGERS (of Fresno, CA), mother and daughter quilters, who are grandmother and mother, respectively, of Holman member Candace Hobson. The Hobson children have been blessed to have quilts created especially for them by Grandma. Quilts by Holman member Vera Stewart, and members of the Los Angeles and the Pasadena/Altadena African American Quilters organizations were also on display.
Youth Instrumental Recital VIII was held on April 15, 2012. We had nine (9) young musicians perform at this annual event. Five of our musicians were from the community, and the others were all Holmanites. Our presentation included a solo performance on the Hand Bells by Maritza Brown, one of Holman young adults. We are always grateful for the opportunity to share the talent of our youth, and to give them a venue to present themselves and the musical talents that has blessed their lives. The Arts Council is also grateful to Mrs. Evelyn M. Freeman, who always assists us in making contact with young musicians from the community.
20th Anniversary Arts Council Gala Celebration was the highlight of our year. The celebration took place on August 11, 2012, and was planned as an opportunity to celebrate the mission and purpose of the Holman Arts Council. Our keynote speaker was Ms. Charmaine Jefferson, Executive Director of the California African American Museum (CAAM), and brought a message that was inspiring, entertaining and challenging. The evening also included three other highlights: (1) the Arts Council presented a gift to the church – a beautiful sculpture title “Mother Love” by an unknown artist; (2) Mrs. Dorothy Lawson was recognized and honored as founder and mentor of the Arts Council, and Mark Clay, for taking hold of the reins and leading the ministry over the past few years; and (3) a presentation was made on behalf of Congresswoman Karen Bass to Mrs. Lawson for her leadership.

The Arts Council is hopeful that we will be able to plan activities of an educational / informational nature under the umbrella of the arts to present here at Holman.
We give thanks for our Holman family and friends for your continued support of this ministry that seeks to bring opportunities for us to experience the arts in all of its forms/mediums, and gain the knowledge and nurturing that it provides for us culturally as a people, and the spiritual inspiration that we gain as children of God.
