Holman Choir
THE HOLMAN CHOIR
William Campbell, Jr., director
The Holman Choir is a famous one.
Great Music has always been a part of the worship experience at Holman. As Holman Church grew, so did the need for a larger and more varied music Program. Dr. J. David Bowick was the architect of that program. Under his direction, the choir sang anthems, spirituals and contemporary gospel. Spirituals became a staple at Holman with the annual Negro Spirituals Concert as a highlight of the choir year. In addition, the choir performed works by Handel, Mozart, Mendelsohn and Brahms with the LA Philharmonic and the Southeast Symphony.
Dr. Bowick directed the choir at various times for a total of twenty-five years. Dr. Gwendolyn Wyatt, Wilbert Howard and Charles Dickerson followed and continued to bring its message to the congregation and to the community. Under these directors, the choir further expanded its repertoire and found new ways to reach the community and the world. The choir's program is now in the hands of William Campbell, Jr. Dr. Raleigh Bastine is the organist.
While some members of the choir are trained musicians, the majority of its members are dedicated volunteer singers who join their voices to praise God in song. Membership is unique in that there are no paid singers in the choir. New members are always welcome.
The Holman Choir sings 1st and 2nd Sundays at 8 and 11 a.m.
and 4th and 5th Sundays at 8 a.m. only.
